Solarworks Tint Blogger • October 15, 2019

What are the Georgia window tint laws and how dark can you go? Click here for a breakdown on how everything works.

georgia window tint laws
Have you heard of the 32% law? If not, please find below an informational guide about the 32% regulation below. The 32% law applies to you if you live in Georgia and are interested in getting your car or truck windows darkened.

Starting in 2005, Georgia legislators wanted to make sure there were adequate safety provisions for what is called VLT. VLT stands for Visible Light Transmission. The Georgia window tint laws are specific and states on your front side windshield must allow for at least 32% of light.

When you want to tint the windows on your car or van, choosing the right window tinting company is important. Choosing the right company isn't important just because of the price. It is important because your tinting window company needs to know and work within the Georgia law.

Your window tinting company need to be able to perform exemplary, legal, VLT beneficial work in their tinting jobs. The company then needs to integrate it all with the best price.

Georgia Window Tint Laws

Most car and van owners want to know how dark is too dark for their window tint? When you are driving a car here are your window tinting limits:

  • Front side window - Must allow for at least 32% light
  • Rear Window - Must allow for at least 32% of light
  • Back Side Window - Must allow for at least 32% of light
  • Windshield's non-reflective tint allowed on top 6" of windshield
If you drive an SUV or van, here are your window tinting limits:

  • Front Side Window - Must allow for at least 32% light
  • Rear Window - Any darkness is allowed
  • Back Side Windows - Any darkness is allowed
  • Windshield's non-reflective tint allowed on top 6" of windshield
There are some other important window tint specifics you need to know.

Legal Window Reflection Tint

It's common for a window tint to reflect incoming light. The window tint helps reduce your glare and heat when driving. Georgia took the glare and heat factor into consideration when they addressed window reflections when using tints.

When you are driving a car, SUV or van here are your window reflection tint laws:

  • Front side windows - Must be below 20% reflective
  • Back Side Windows - Must be below 20% reflective
There there are the window tinting laws on the 'other' parts of your car, SUV, or van.

The Rules and Regulations for Other Window Tints on Vehicles

There’s more to Georgia law when you tint other sections of your car, van, or SUV. Some of the rules and regulations are listed below:

  • Side mirrors - You have no restrictions
  • You aren't allowed to use red or amber colors for your tint
  • There is a tint variance range of 3% light transmission
  • Every company providing tinted window services needs to provide you with a film certificate
  • If you have tinted windows, a sticker is required to be displayed on windshield
  • There are medical exemptions allowed for special tints
But there are true benefits of tinting the windows in your car, van, or SUV. These benefits cannot be overstated.

When You Break Georgia Window Tinting Laws

There are indeed some great benefits to having window tinting done in your car, van or SUV. When you tint you block more UV rays. You benefit by driving a cooler vehicle with window tints.

Window tints reduce risk of your window shattering, and you enjoy more privacy when you are driving. One of the biggest benefits is it helps prevent break-ins on in your car. If thieves cannot see what's in your car quickly and easily they often move on to the next car.

The Benefits of Window Tinting for Your Vehicle

The benefits of window tinting are obvious. So is the legal consequence if you violate a window tinting rule or regulation. These legal consequences cost you money.

If you are stopped by police and your vehicle has tinted windows below 32% you earn a misdemeanor and a fine of $124.00. Police in Georgia now has special device equipment which gauges how dark your window tint is.

Exceptions to Georgia Law on Vehicle Window Tinting

Like any other law, there are exceptions. In Georgia you have the right to apply for an exception for your vehicle's window tint. Some of the exceptions deal with medical conditions.

Medical conditions may require you ride or operate a vehicle with sunlight protection different than the Georgia legal regulations. You do need to apply for this exception with the Department of Public Safety. You must include in your application a $10 processing fee.

You must also include a written letter from your physician or optometrist stating why your medical need requires a window tinting exception. Also, the Georgia window tinting law statute doesn't apply to any vehicle with tinted windows if the vehicle is a factory delivery. If you bought your factory delivery car and it came with tinted windows, you are exempt, but that doesn't stop police from stopping you.

The police have no way of knowing you have a factory direct window tint. There are many instances in Georgia when police stop drivers for window tint issues and find other crimes they take you into custody. Another exception is any commercial and government vehicles don't need to follow the statute.
